Update from the House of Hope

During three weeks in May, 17 people from four churches traveled to Honduras to work and minister at the House of Hope. Most of the construction was done on the volunteer house: the roof and inside finished, insulation installed, the electric wiring done, sub flooring put down, and showers installed. The babies were cared for, and all of the children received a lot of attention.

We experienced several emotional reunions. The first took place in Tegucigalpa when two of us took a baby to a family who wanted to adopt her. The baby had been very sick several times; the judge deemed the teenage mother unfit to raise the child and ordered the baby to the House of Hope. The week before we arrived, a group of eye doctors from Tegucigalpa stayed at the House of Hope. One of the doctors who has no children wanted to adopt the baby. Through tears of joy, we placed the baby in the arms of the potential adoptive mother.

The next day, Anna England and Tom Brian visited Senia’s mother, Lesbia. The England family has been keeping Senia while she receives surgery on her face, feet, and hands. They have adopted Senia but still needed her mother’s signature. Because Lesbia has AIDS, she said she wanted to see Senia one more time before she dies.

A group of ten from Mabank UMC will travel to the House of Hope in June, and 15 people from FUMC Allen travel to Honduras in June. For information, contact Tom Brian at atbdds@yahoo.com or 972.727.5436.
