Walking the labyrinth is an ancient spiritual practice found in many traditions around the world. Within the Christian tradition, it was sometimes seen as a symbol of a pilgrimage. For contemporary persons, the labyrinth may be seen as a way of meditative prayer, of centering, of drawing nearer to God and to one's own soul, of letting go. The labyrinth has only one path so there are no tricks to it and no dead ends. The path winds throughout and become a mirror for where we are in our lives. It touches our sorrows and releases our joy. On this evening, Jeanie Miley will present a brief overview of the history and practice of labyrinth-walking and some suggestions for walking the labyrinth. She will explain one way of walking the labyrinth which focuses on three movements-- releasing, receiving and returning, and will facilitate a candle-lit walk of the beautiful labyrinth at FUMC. Jeanie Miley was trained to facilitate labyrinth walking at the Cathedral in Chartres, France. Trained by the person responsible for the renewed interest in labyrinth walking world-wide, Lauren Artress, Jeanie is also a trained Centering Prayer facilitator and Spiritual Director. Lauren Artress is the author of the classic Walking the Sacred Path: Rediscovering the Labyrinth as a Spiritual Tool, and the founder and director of Veriditas. Jeanie Miley is a teacher and workshop leader with a focus on connecting people with God. She is a columnist and is completing her tenth book, Dance Lessons: Everyday Mysticism for Ordinary Saints.
